AUREOLE

This shape is a hybrid object, relating directly to hat making and shrine making. The title Aureole references the glowing disc hovering over a Saints brow. I see this shape as a combination of the brim of a hat and that disc.

When I first began to build shrines in Santa Fe, my response was to how a cowboy prays; removing his hat and holding it to his chest. It only seemed natural to place a shrine in the crown of the hat.

Foundry Work / Bronze

Of all my experiences at SAIC, I must admit, working in the foundry was the most exhilarating, and rewarding. There aren't many words that can express the heightened awareness of heat felt when a 2500 degree crucible of bronze is within inches of melting your face off...yes, it's that hot!

As with any process of producing a work of art, there are definitive steps to take for a successful outcome. Once you know the process, there's only the materials to master. Working with casting metal is not really any different, I find that good design skills transfer easily.

My first bronze. In the photo above I'm holding the shell that will soon be filled with molten bronze. In a few hours, after it has cooled, the excess bronze is trimmed off and voila' you have a hat!!
