FROM THE FIGURE

These are a sampling of drawings and paintings working from the live model.  The examples shown are traditional oil paintings on canvas, vine charcoal drawings, and mixed media drawings executed using oil stick, oil pastel, and graphite.  My mixed media drawings are executed on 2 ply rag paper.  I begin with several "gesture drawings" to develop movement and coat the surface with paint. (Gesture drawings are normally full figure and are executed in 5 to 15 seconds, each pose.) I then continue to layer drawings (5 to 30 minutes each pose) developing the composition as the model moves. There really is no way to preconceive an outcome with this type of drawing, consequently each piece begins to take on a life of its own, showing their immediacy and freshness.

Figure Painting Studio Critique, SAIC, Spring 2009

This is a selection of the work I produced in Susanna Coffey's figure painting class. She offered an unusual approach to painting the figure, emphasizing the building of a painting over the technicalities of representing the figure. All work is oil painting on canvas or panel, the largest paintings shown are 36"X 24".
