EVOLUTIONS

"Yea Tho I Walk" was first concieved the day after 9-11. I lived with the idea for quite awhile, watching as the events of that tragic day enveloped my life. Two years later, just after the death of my Mother I felt the emotion return to my work and I was able to complete the drawing.

This is the initial pencil sketch (approx. 11"X14").
It was drawn on 9-12.

The full-size (40"X 32") drawing is begun with a quick gestural line-drawing, using graphite stick on 2 ply rag board.

Here the basic forms are blocked in, and the under painting process is begun. The bright areas around the hat and the ear are most crucial to achieve the "glowing effect" in the finished work.

At this point details begin to emerge, and the contrasts are becoming more defined, solidified. I always liken this stage to adolescence; everything looks awkward.

Here the middle values are developed, shadows appear to deepen and further focusing is achieved. Fabrics have always presented a hearty challenge to me, one that I've come to relish.
