There are so many ways to make a portrait. You can have sketches, line drawings, watercolor renderings, mixed media drawings, traditional oil or acrylic paintings, or even an abstracted impression. They can be in full color, black and white, or anything in between. You can have a live sitting or from work done from photographic reference. The sitting can be challenging for the subject but it offers more information for the artist. Working from photographs is good but the outcome is then fairly predetermined. Choosing to have an impression of the person, leaves the artist’s imagination to run wild delivering an abstracted image or even a construction of found objects! Finally, the finished piece can show a head pose, 3/4 figure or full figure pose, or the figure in a real or surreal setting.
